Functional life skills are essential for young people with autism to increase their independence, confidence and self esteem in their everyday lives at home, at school and in the community.
Every young person with autism is different and so the life skills one person is taught and the pace at which they are taught will differ from another. As there are endless life skills to be learnt, the process can seem overwhelming. Therefore, our hands-on approach can be beneficial to help them build confidence and independence in their daily lives at a pace which is right for them.
We use visual aids and checklists, which are key for building life skills where they feel supported when working on new skills. Practise makes perfect and so we allow young people to practise in a realistic setting is vital for them to master skills, i.e. going to the local shop to buy an item, asking a stranger for directions, initiating conversation with someone, community safety skills including crossing the road safely or knowing how to take a bus; and many others.
